Large Animal Facilities

Stables and Yard

The Townsville Veterinary Clinic is a purpose built facility located on approximately 1 acre of land. The grounds are fully fenced with a loading ramp and ample parking for trucks and floats to unload your horse safely. There are hospitalisation facilities for up to 10 horses including day yards, intensive care and mare and foal stalls.

We have 2 undercover examination areas equipped with crushes for routine procedures and reproductive examinations. Radiographic, ultrasound and endoscopic examinations are performed in the comfort of an enclosed airconditioned examination room. This enables high quality radiographs and ultrasound images to be obtained for an accurate diagnosis.

Our equine surgery suite is fully equipped with surgery table, gaseous anaesthetic machine and padded recovery room. This means specialised surgical procedures for colic, bone chips and OCD, rig castrations, throat conditions and tendon and ligament problems to be performed in a clean environment. When under general anaesthesia, horses are monitored closely using indirect and direct blood pressure machines and electrocardiography. Horses can then wake up in the relative safety of the padded recovery room.

Specialist Horse Surgery

A full time specialist surgeon ensures your horse has access to complex life saving procedures if required. Some of the procedures performed include orthopaedic surgery (i.e. arthroscopy, fracture repair), colic surgery, corneal grafting (eye surgery), tumour removal and joint fusion.

Medical cases such as acute diarrhea, fungal eye infections and many colic cases require intensive medical management. The Townsville Veterinary Clinic can provide round the clock monitoring and constant intravenous fluid therapy and eye treatments when required.

Equine Dentistry is a very important and common procedure. With two AEVA (Australian Equine Veterinary Association) accredited veterinarians in dentistry on staff, your horse’s mouth is in good hands. We have Powerfloat equipment and perform radiography if required to fully examine you horse’s teeth.

We routinely perform reproductive examinations including ultrasound and uterine biopsy assessments on mares. Artificial breeding techniques are becoming increasingly popular and we have established a breeding facility with paddock and stabling facilities for mares and foals.
